The third race of the Chicago Cyclocross Cup took us to the south side of the city to Dan Ryan Woods. This course was different than last weekend because of some elevation changes and three pesky 8 inch barriers. Which led to the question of the day, ride or run?
Mr. Consistency, Al Reyes, battled it out with SRAM Factory Team rider JP and finished 5th in the 50+ race. These guys may be over 50 years old, but their competitive spirit is as young as anyone out there. Isabel is still cutting her teeth in her first season and making small victories like riding the steep hills some where forced to run. Lindsay had her best finish yet this season just off of the podium in 4th place in the Women 1/2/3 race. Pat also gets a consistency award for his 13th place in the Cat. 3 race. Mike, Matt, and I lined up in the Cat. 1/2/3 race. With good positions on the front row of the start, Mike and I took to the front of the race (around 4:30 in the video courtesy of the Sammy's Racing team) after one of the steep hills, created a gap on a technical descent, and never looked back. Our advantage grew from there and we finished 47 seconds in front of third place.
This weekend is a double race weekend. Saturday in Wauconda, IL and Sunday in Carpentersville, IL. Good luck to Chicago area youngster David Lombardo, heading over to Europe with the USA Jr. National Team to race at the highest level of the sport for 17-18 year old racers.
